Setting Up DoodleMail

You need access to a POP3 and an SMTP server to use DoodleMail. AT&T Wireless Services does not provide POP3 or SMTP. So if you are using their service, you must find a POP3 and SMTP server that you can access from their network. This site provides a list of free providers of POP3 and SMTP email.

TO CONFIGURE:

Touch MENU–>Message–>Configure. The fields are as follows:

SMTP SERVER: Make sure that the upper left box is checked. Enter the Internet address of your SMTP server. If your SMTP server requires authentication by accessing the POP server, check the prePOP box.

FROM (name): Your name. It will appear in outgoing messages.

ADDRESS: The return email address for your messages. It should be the address to send you mail at your chosen POP3 server. It will appear in outgoing messages.

POP3 SERVER: The Internet address of the POP3 server.
Check Beep to hear an audible alert when you have new messages. Otherwise the Palm will remain silent.
Check leave on server to leave your email on the POP3 server after it is retrieved by DoodleMail. Otherwise it is deleted from the server.

USER: Your login name on the POP3 server. Typically it is just the part of your email address up to the @-sign, but on mycampus.com it is the entire address.

PASSWORD: Your password on the POP3 server.

USAGE:

TO GET NEW MESSAGES: Touch "Get". If there are new messages, the Palm will beep with the alarm tone and flash the screen for thirty seconds. To stop the flashing, touch the screen with the stylus.

TO RESPOND TO INCOMING MESSAGES: scribble on the incoming message and touch "Reply". A pop-up window will confirm the sender that you are replying to.

TO SEND A NEW MESSAGE: Use MENU–>Page –> New to get a blank screen. Scribble the message. When you are done, touch "Send". Verify the outgoing address on the pop-up window.

HINTS FOR COMPOSING MESSAGES:

  • ERASING - You can turn the pen into an eraser by touching the "d".
  • INSERTING GRAFFITI TEXT - Touch 't', touch where you want the text to begin, and enter graffiti. Click the 'T' when you are done.

MESSAGE STORAGE: All incoming and outgoing messages are stored until you remove them. You can touch the the "1" to move between messages. Under MENU–>Page, you will find several commands that manipulate stored messages.

POLLING FOR INCOMING MESSAGES: Touch "MENU–>Message–>AutoCheck". Make sure that "ENABLED" is checked. Specify how often you want to check for incoming messages. After the Palm powers off with DoodleMail running, it will periodically wake up and poll for new messages. To stop the polling, power up the Palm and start the application launcher or any other application.

LIMITATIONS: Incoming messages must be short. They are truncated after the end of the page.

REMOVING DOODLEMAIL FROM YOUR PALM: Use the application launcher to delete Dmail, Dmret and DmailDB.
